Foster Homes Are Urgently Needed On a Daily Basis

Home Fur Keeps represents a critical link for shelters, rescue organizations, and animal lovers to collectively save more animals by connecting volunteers from the community as temporary “safe-houses” for animals in need.

We are faced with the reality of having to turn away animals and we desperately need your help. There are many animals we cannot help because we simply do not have enough foster homes.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT FOSTERING

Fostering is the most rewarding thing you can do as an animal lover. Every animal that enters a foster home is in need of saving — whether from neglect, abuse, or abandonment. A comfortable, loving foster home provides animals with a stable environment where they can recover, heal, and feel loved. It is also an opportunity for us to better understand their temperament and needs so we can successfully match them with the perfect forever home.

So many people ask me “why bother searching for a foster? Why not just skip that step and find someone to adopt the animal?” What they don’t realize is that foster homes are our most valued resource. It ultimately comes down to life or death. All our animals in foster care are there because they were saved from dire situations. EIther their time was up at the shelter and their fate was put in our hands, or they were rescued from an abusive situation. Some are strays that may never have known what it was like to live with a family and feel loved. Putting these animals into a foster home allows us to observe their traits and behaviors so we can search for the best forever home for them and match their needs with a family ready to accommodate them. Additionally, pairing a pet with a forever home takes time. Foster homes are absolutely necessary in order to give us time to find the perfect match.

Our animals are matched with foster homes that can accommodate their age, temperament, health conditions, etc. We follow the same guidelines as any other 501(c)(3). All interested parties must fill out a foster/adoption application and participate in a phone interview. Additionally, a home check must be conducted. As burdensome as a home check is it is important to understand that this is what helps us weed out those who cannot handle the responsibilities of taking care of a pet.

Requirements of a Foster Home

Fostering an animal means you’re making a commitment to care for that animal until its forever home is found. You are responsible for ensuring they receive quality food, nutritional treats, the medical care they need, among lots of love! Our forum is a great resource to network with other fosters and coordinate vet checkups, request training advice, and ask for help. Our City Advocates are also on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Home Fur Keeps takes on all the costs of its fostered pets and all expenses must be approved by Home Fur Keeps prior to being incurred. Animals in care receive vaccinations, heartworm tests, are dewormed, and are spayed/neutered prior to being placed in a foster home (unless there is a medical emergency to delay surgery).

There is no such thing as too many fosters. Please consider filling out a foster application right now.

We completely understand your concern. Our focus is on animals that need us to step in in order to save their lives and foster homes are needed to give these animals a place to rehabilitate from their past. It’s very common to develop an attachment to foster pets and understand how hard it is to say goodbye to them when they find a permanent home. But please also realize how rewarding it is to watch your foster pet start the next chapter of their lives. If you choose to foster a pet you are saving an animal in need and are responsible for rehabilitating it and offering it the best life possible.
Most of our animals come from high-kill shelters that are at risk for euthanasia. Many are also strays or abused animals in critical need.
No – do not wait to send in an application! Applications take time to process. If you want to foster, or are even thinking about fostering, please fill out an application and send it back to us at your earliest convenience.
Upon intake, all our animals are fully vetted (age and health conditions permitting), spayed/neutered, rabies/DHLPP/bordatella vaccines, microchipping, heartworm testing, and fecal testing. If necessary, our animals will also undergo surgeries, receive medication, and a grooming and/or dental appointment. While our animals are being treated for any health concerns, we utilize our member database to pair that animal with the perfect foster home.
Fosters may play the most important role in our animal rescue process. Because we don’t have a permanent facility, Home Fur Keeps’ foster program is one of the most crucial elements of our rescue organization. We generally don’t know much about the animals that come into our care, but people looking to adopt a pet want to know everything about the animal they’re interested in. This is where our foster families step in and get to know our animals. They share videos, photos, and updates regarding the pet’s behavior and progress. This way those interested in adopting will have enough information to determine if a pet will fit into their home or not. We want to match a foster pet with you and your lifestyle that is mutually beneficial. By temporarily taking an animal into your home, the animal is given time to adjust to a home environment, and Home Fur Keeps has more time to find a permanent home.
Yes. If the animal is required to spend time at one of our vet clinics we encourage potential fosters to visit them and determine if they are willing to take the animal into their home and care for it. If a stray comes into our care we typically need a foster to step forward immediately. In this case, if the animal and foster family meet and don’t fit well, we will understand and will inquire with other available fosters about taking the animal in instead. We work with you to place an animal into your home that fits your lifestyle.
The length of time varies with every animal. Some animals may only stay in foster care for several days, while others may stay for months. We have no way to determine how long they will need to be in your care. However, if you need assistance at any time with your foster animal (vacation, etc), we will provide them with a place to stay while you are gone. Additionally, if you can no longer care for your foster animal please let us know as soon as possible so we can quickly coordinate efforts to place them into another foster home.
Absolutely not! We ask nothing more from you than showing your compassion for our animals and generously taking them into your home to love and care for until they’re adopted. All animals that come into our care will have their own listing on our website, as well as a donation page specifically for them. All donations will help cover the cost of vetting, spay/neutering, medical, dental, food, and supplies for that animal. If we don’t raise enough funds for that animal we will dig into the donations to our organization to help pay for any additional costs.
If you choose to foster you will be required to take the animal into your home until an adopter is found. During this time, you may need to transport your pet to the vet or to adoption events. If you need help with transport you are welcome to reach out to members in your area by searching our online member database in your city, or by asking for help on our online forum.
Home Fur Keeps will take care of all the payments. Every foster parent will be given their City Advocate’s contact information, so you will be able to communicate with them regarding your foster pet’s needs. We will determine what appointments will need to be made and you will be responsible for scheduling the appointments at a time that works best for you. You will then be asked to let your City Advocate know the date and time of the appointment so we can make ourselves available to talk to the doctor and pay the bill if necessary.
Absolutely! As the foster parent you will know the pet in your care better than anyone else. We encourage you to search our member database to see if any approved adopters will become a perfect match for the animal. If someone steps forward and shows interest in adopting your foster pet you will have final say in whether or not you think they will be a perfect match.
